CHAPTER 16

“Pamela’s Pampered Pet Parlour. For all your furbaby grooming requirements.” Megan read from the sign-written window of the pink building, its candy-striped awning extended over two tables on the pavement.

“Well, come on then,” said Des. He tapped his jacket pocket to make sure his notebook was there, then clapped his hands and rubbed them together. “No time like the present.”

Megan pushed open the door and stuck her head in. “Hi,” she said to the young blonde woman who was cradling an excitable Bichon Frise in her arms. “Is Pamela around?”

“She’s taking a break at the moment.” The girl smiled and turned her head, getting an earful of dog slobber for her trouble. “Stop that, Monroe! Honestly, this dog’s worse than my ex-boyfriend.” She hesitated, then laughed. “Can I help? I’m her daughter?”

“Um, I think I need to speak to your mum, if that’s okay,” said Megan, stepping into the salon. “I probably should have phoned before I set off, but I wondered if she could spare us a few minutes. We don’t mind waiting.”

“Looks like you’ve got your work cut out for you with that one,” said Des, lifting his chin to the dog.

The woman nodded. “She’s actually very good—just a bit hyper.” She put a hand to the side of her mouth and whispered. “She’s one of my favourites, but don’t tell her, or it’ll go to her head.” She laughed again and put the dog into a gated area at the side of the salon. “Your mummy will be here to collect you soon, Monroe, so you stay there and be a good girl until she gets here.

“Right,” she said, turning back to Megan and Des, and pulling her high ponytail a little tighter. “Mum’s upstairs making some calls, but I’m sure she’ll have time to come down. Can I ask what it’s regarding?”

“Er,” said Megan, wishing she’d thought this out in advance. “It’s a personal matter, actually. A friend of mine who knows your Mum suggested I speak to her.”

The woman raised an eyebrow before walking to the back of the salon and calling up a staircase. “Mum! You’ve got visitors.”

She waved through the door to a man with a large Golden Retriever. “You’ll have to excuse me—here’s my next client.” Pointing to the tables on the pavement, she said, “You can sit outside while you’re waiting, if you like. Mum shouldn’t be too long.”

Megan waited until she and Des were seated at a table before putting her head in her hands. “I can’t believe I said that. Who comes to speak to a dog groomer they’ve never met before about a ‘personal matter?’” She smacked a palm to her forehead. “What a complete idiot.”

“Well, you’ve said it now,” said Des, “so you can’t take it back. Don’t worry about it. Look, here comes someone.”

The salon door opened and a short redhead with a bubble perm and grey roots appeared on the pavement. “I’m Pamela. You wanted to see me about a personal matter?” she said, with a wary expression, her chubby fingers fiddling with a cross on the end of a thick, gold chain.
